About the Artist:

Susan Clare paints ‘mostly representational’ watercolours, infused with the lush beauty of nature, drenched in the dancing sunlight of the Caribbean.

After science education in England and a career in scuba diving, Susan decided to foster the seeds of her creativity, sewn by her artist mother. In March 1997, with self- study and inspiring guidance from sculptress/painter, Jannette Eyles, the dream blossomed. She spent eight months working from Jannette’s studio, honing drawing skills, capturing tropical plants, flowers, landscapes and still life of rural Jamaica, in watercolour on paper, aiming to connect the viewer with the vibrancy of nature and the value of a simple life. In November, 1997, Susan showed her first solo exhibition at Round Hill Hotel, and has not looked back since.

In 1998, Susan started to paint children’s portraits by commission, which now form a large part of her work. She is drawn into the world within the image:  “The play of light is magical; it brings life to the subject, be it ripe fruit, rustic stonework or the glowing complexion of a child.”

Susan finds figurative work most challenging, yet most rewarding. “Nothing surpasses the deceptive simplicity of the human form. Softly drawn or in flowing watercolour, if the body is rendered with subtlety and sophistication, nothing more is needed.”

Playful aspects creep into her work: symbolic motifs, texture and simpler subjects, mixed media on multiple linked canvasses, and on yupo.

“I love to add mystery with ambiguous passages of light and texture.”  Some new, whimsical pieces lightheartedly remind us of our responsibility to the

environment, by including bottle-caps and other found plastic objects.

Since 2001, Susan has shown five more major exhibitions in Montego Bay and Negril, and many group shows, across Jamaica. In March 2003, she showed in a multinational exhibition at the Broward County Library, Ft Lauderdale, celebrating Women’s History month. In 2004, she curated an exhibition showcasing eleven artists for a charity benefit at Round Hill Hotel. Every summer from 2005 to 2011 inclusive, Susan directed, organized and curated the fundraising Art Auction for the Heinz Simonitsch School, their major fundraiser each year.  Another recent exhibition was, again, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in November 2012, showing at two locations along with artist and friend, Caroline Courtney.

Susan was chosen as one of seven artists, for inclusion in a coffee table book on "Montego Bay - Jamaica" by Pauline Reid, published in 2011.

Having very recently relocated to the pretty new City of Chelmsford in the UK, Susan is now (from October 2013) available for commissioned Portraits - People, Pets or Property, anywhere in the South of England.

Susan's work is at Coyaba Resort, the World Bank in Kingston and can be found in private collections in Jamaica, the Caribbean, England, USA, Canada, Europe and Iceland.
