The Story:

A good friend of mine, in Jamaica, is Wendy Ann Lee. She has made her life’s work dedicated to helping the wildlife and environment in Jamaica. Wendy runs the Seven Oaks Sanctuary for Wildlife in Runaway Bay, where she cares for injured birds and other small wildlife. Since she is also the game warden for the area, her work also involves rescuing parrots from illegal traders, and then caring for them, since they cannot be re-adapted to the wild. Both species of Amazona parrots, yellow and black-billed, are protected under law since their populations are dwindling and considered to be ‘vulnerable’ on the endangered species register. Populations are threatened even further, right now, as portions of the Cockpit Country, Jamaica’s interior forest and protected for generations, is now the subject of controversy for bauxite mining, which would remove the trees that the parrots need for nesting and many other devastating consequences. (Follow Wendy’s efforts to keep the public informed on her FB page ‘Protect Jamaica’s Cockpit Country!’).

My thanks to Wendy for allowing me to paint from her lovely photograph. Read more about Wendy and her work on my blog page on this site here
